Wisconsin's United Council,
one of the oldest state student associations in the country, hired the SET Project
in the spring of 2005 as it was contemplating a massive organizational restructuring.
Up until that time, United Council had a 165-person board of directors that
met every month to make organizational and policy decisions. Due to its size
it was difficult for student leaders to make quick political decisions on higher
education policy and to implement quick campaigns. They were also contemplating
changing their full-time staff structure.
United Council began looking
at other SSAs around the country and called upon the SET Project as a resource.
We provided student leaders and staff in Wisconsin with nour recently published
guide and analysis of SSAs - Building the Student Voice - and with additional
information and experience to help guide their restructuring. We met with students
and spoke with individuals over the phone about potential organizational structures.
A SET Project organizer was brought into United Council's Strategic Planning
Committee to help the group finalize their restructuring process and continued
to support the group as they implemented their changes. We are happy to have
helped United Council develop a more manageable structure that has 27 board
members, a student president and vice president and a staff structure centered
around a full-time professional executive director.
