SUNY Binghamton's Affordable Textbooks Campaign
During the spring 2004 semester, the Student Association of the State University (SASU) at Binghamton University ran its first campus-based campaign in quite some time - the Affordable Textbooks Campaign. The SET Project crafted this campaign to fit SASU's needs on campus: build name recognition, increase recruitment, and begin to get results for students locally. To this end, the SET Project provided an organizer to work with students part-time on campus as well as through phone consultations.
The SET Project provided SASU with a local campaign guide describing the campaign's strategy and actions as well as a semester-long plan that students could easily carry out. During the semester, students gathered hundreds of signatures to federal legislators to support a federal investigation of the textbook industry and their business practices. SASU was also very successful at gathering campus press coverage regarding the high price of textbooks, which helped to re-inject SASU's name into the media. Because of the Affordable Textbooks Campaign, SASU was a much more high-profile organization on campus with an increased base of volunteers.
