Student Government Activism at Iowa State University
The Government of the Student Body (GSB) at Iowa State University launched an activist group, ActivUs, to increase student participation and win victories for students. ActivUs leaders Henry Alliger and Mara Spooner turned to the SET Project for campaign development and consultation. The SET Project helped ActivUs develop three campaigns: working for student loan reform on the federal level; fighting for increased funding for higher education in the state house; and working to have Iowa State adopt a worker's rights code of conduct to ensure that clothing made with the Iowa State logo is not made with sweatshop labor. ActivUs's debt work was the most successful, garnering front page coverage on the Des Moines Register and aiding in the national campaign to lower student debt.
